The “ONR Openness Verified” Badge
The “ONR Openness Verified” badge is a clear, factual signal within the neuromorphic ecosystem. It signifies that a project, paper, or resource was surfaced by community interest and has successfully passed the Open Neuromorphic automated openness checks.
Earning the badge means your project will be featured in our Research Registry, with a dedicated page that serves as a permanent record of its verification.
Please note: This badge confirms that the resource’s code, data, and license are genuinely open and accessible. It is not an institutional judgment or editorial endorsement of the work’s scientific findings or importance.
Open Source Tiers: Gold vs. Silver
To accommodate the varying licensing needs of academic and industrial research, ONR awards badges across two tiers:
🥇 Gold Standard
Awarded to projects using fully permissive, OSI-approved open-source licenses (e.g., MIT, Apache 2.0, GPL, CC-BY, CC-BY-SA). These resources allow anyone to study, modify, and share the material for any purpose, including commercial use.
🥈 Silver Standard
Awarded to projects that provide open access to their code and data, but include restrictions on how it can be used. This applies to licenses with Non-Commercial (NC) or No-Derivatives (ND) clauses (e.g., CC-BY-NC, CC-BY-ND, or custom academic-only licenses). We highlight these to ensure the community can still learn from the research, while transparently flagging the usage restrictions.
The Registry Page
Each project that successfully clears the pipeline is granted a permanent page within our Research Registry. This page serves as the official record of the community’s engagement and typically includes:
- An overview of the project and its abstract.
- Direct links to the resource (e.g., GitHub repository, paper).
- A journalistic summary of the community’s discussion.
- The date of verification, the assigned tier, and the total community engagement score.
The badge that you display on your project’s GitHub README will link directly to this registry page.
